The Nunavut Housing Corporation is now accepting offers from the general public for 11 unsold units in the Staff Condo Program, located in Iqaluit. Previously available only to Government of Nunavut employees, these condos are part of a controversial initiative aimed at providing discounted housing to GN staff. An ethics investigation in 2021 revealed that the program’s management did not comply with the GN’s code of ethics or financial policies.
The condos, situated at 5196 and 5198 Qajisarvik Rd., are known as the Plateau Project. Despite efforts to sell the condos at a reduced price of $249,900 for GN employees, none had sold as of January. Additionally, 36 units in the “Road to Nowhere” project were repurposed for staff and affordable housing earlier this year, but there’s no update on their vacancy status.
The Nunavut Housing Corporation acquired the four buildings that comprise the Staff Condo Project in 2016 for $14.3 million, with the Plateau units estimated to be valued between $434,625 and $439,200 as of 2022. Applications for purchasing the condos are open until September 30, targeting full-time residents aged 19 and older.
