The Uquutaq Society is planning a potential five-storey, mixed-use building in Iqaluit’s core area to provide affordable housing and commercial space. The proposed site, located along Queen Elizabeth Way in the ATCO Loop, has not yet been opened for bidding by the City of Iqaluit. During a recent community information session, Kevin Eaton, Uquutaq’s incoming executive director, outlined the project, which aims to offer stable, long-term housing primarily for Inuit families and individuals.
The building would feature commercial space on the ground floor for a local non-profit and at least 60 residential units spread across the upper floors, including a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. Preliminary designs include gathering spaces and parking for boats and recreational vehicles.
While Uquutaq awaits a request for proposals from the city, the site is part of a consolidation plan approved last year to enhance housing density. The city is currently conducting environmental assessments, expected to conclude in November, before issuing the proposal request. City spokesperson Geoff Byrne emphasized a fair bidding process, ensuring all qualified organizations, including Uquutaq, have equal access to information and opportunities.
