Return of mobile outreach service in Thunder Bay, Ont., speaks to high demand for support

The Street Outreach Services (SOS) program in Thunder Bay, Ontario, has been reinstated after being discontinued in 2022 due to funding shortages. The program, which offers mobile outreach, crisis support, and harm reduction services, is crucial in addressing rising homelessness in the city. SOS provides essential supplies, support, and transportation to shelters, detox centers, or other key services, operating seven days a week from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. The program aims to divert vulnerable individuals from emergency services or incarceration, helping them access more appropriate resources.

Shelter House’s Executive Director, Brendan Carlin, highlighted the positive response from community partners and clients, emphasizing the program’s importance for those who cannot stay in shelters or need extra help. SOS is valued for building trust with clients, which can encourage them to seek further support.

Additionally, Shelter House is collaborating with Community Clothing Assistance to host Thunder Bay’s first community-wide garage sale. This initiative encourages residents to host sales at their homes, with proceeds supporting local organizations. The event, happening Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., aims to raise funds and foster community connections while providing a low-barrier way to give back.
