P.E.I. nurses and midwives will soon be required to complete Indigenous cultural safety training aimed at improving the experiences of Indigenous patients in the province’s health-care system.
The new practice directive comes from the P.E.I. College of Nursing and Midwifery, which worked with Indigenous groups on the Island to develop the training.
Melissa Panton, the college’s chief executive officer and registrar, said it’s part of its effort to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action.
“There are also many microaggressions that happen on a daily basis, and what really surprised me was how frequently that happens right across our country, even within our own health-care facilities here in Prince Edward Island,” Panton said.
“This is an opportunity for those experiences to come to light.”
