Deh Gáh Got’îê First Nation is set to build a 60-bed supportive housing facility in Fort Providence, N.W.T., to help women, 2SLGBTQI+, and children heal and rebuild their lives. Funded by $7.2 million from the Canada Housing and Mortgage Corporation, with additional operational funding from Indigenous Services Canada, the facility will focus on addressing gender-based violence and other challenges.
The 19,000-square-foot facility will feature six modular units with private living spaces for long-term stays, offering a mix of cultural and traditional healing programs, elder guidance, and other services. There will also be outdoor spaces for programming. Deh Gáh Got’îê Chief Michael Vandell emphasized the goal is to foster healthy families and community members by connecting individuals to housing, employment, and support services.
Construction is expected to be completed by April, with programming consultations beginning in early 2024 with social services, the RCMP, and local community leaders. While the initial focus will be on assisting women and children in Fort Providence, the facility aims to expand services to those in need across the Deh Cho region and N.W.T. by fall 2024.
