The federal government, alongside the non-profit Edmonton 2 Spirit (E2S), announced $6.4 million in funding to support Indigenous 2SLGBTQI+ people escaping gender-based violence. The project will create two buildings with 24 supportive housing units, tailored to meet the specific needs of this vulnerable community, including trauma, violence, and marginalization.
On-site programs will offer additional support to residents. Randy Boissonnault, MP for Edmonton-Centre and federal minister, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating that the grassroots E2S organization identified a critical need for safe spaces for the two-spirit community. The project was developed in partnership with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), which is also funding the initiative through the Indigenous Shelter and Transitional Housing Initiative. Additional support for ongoing operations will come from Indigenous Services Canada.
Boissonnault highlighted that the funding reflects the flexibility of federal programs to address diverse needs and praised the initiative for promoting dignity, compassion, and empathy for some of the most marginalized individuals. This funding is part of Ottawa’s broader $115-billion National Housing Strategy, aimed at improving housing access and support for vulnerable populations.
