Bearspaw First Nation in process of buying land to develop west of Calgary

The Bearspaw First Nation is in the process of purchasing 120 hectares of land along the Trans-Canada Highway west of Calgary in partnership with asset management company Durum Capital. The land, located near Calaway Park and across from Springbank Airport, was chosen for its strategic location and business potential. Chief Darcy Dixon emphasized the land’s historical significance to the Bearspaw and Stoney Nakoda people, who have roamed the area for centuries.

The goal is for the Bearspaw First Nation to eventually own the land outright while using development as an opportunity for reconciliation and shared prosperity with neighboring communities. While specific development plans are still unclear, the partnership with Durum aims to explore economic opportunities that benefit both the First Nation and surrounding areas.

Durum Capital CEO Jay Simmons highlighted the strategic appeal of the property, given its proximity to Banff and its active tourism destinations like Calaway Park. Simmons noted his personal connection to the initiative through a former colleague and expressed optimism about the partnership fostering economic opportunities by integrating urban reserves closer to economic centers. The next steps involve finalizing the partnership details and investment plans in the first quarter of next year.
