The third annual Homelessness Challenge has commenced in Elliot Lake, organized by the Elliot Lake Women’s Group to raise awareness about homelessness in the community. The event, which encourages participants to camp outside for three nights and four days, aims to challenge misconceptions about homelessness and highlight the struggles faced by those in need. Executive director Esther Rongoma noted that many believe homelessness does not exist in Elliot Lake, despite the reality of high demand at the local shelter, which has only seven beds.
The initiative also aims to support Larry’s Place Fresh Start, a men’s shelter that relies entirely on community donations, as it lacks guaranteed funding. Since its inception, the challenge has raised $18,000, which supports food security and basic needs for residents. Outreach coordinator Cody Pawliuk emphasized the challenges of homelessness, including the difficulty of securing work and housing while battling harsh weather conditions.
Personal stories shared by shelter clients highlighted the transformative support provided by Larry’s Place. The challenge runs until October 27, inviting community participation and donations, and aims to foster understanding and compassion towards those experiencing homelessness. All community members are encouraged to get involved and show their support.
