Yellowknife city council has accepted a set of recommendations for how to handle homeless encampments — including one to ban camping on municipal land and to “encourage” encampment residents to relocate to territorial land.
Mayor Ben Hendriksen says shifting responsibility by moving residents to Commissioner’s Land is a good thing.
“When it comes to issues like housing, social services, health care, these are [government of Northwest Territories] responsibilities. The city actually has no authority or legal responsibility in these spaces,” said Hendriksen.
