An organization that helps families find Indigenous children that went missing in the health care system is looking to extend its services to Nunavik.
Françoise Ruperthouse, Awacak’s director, and consultant Anna Panasuk were in the region this week and took to the airwaves to share the organization’s mission.
Awacak was founded in 2021 after Quebec passed a bill that would give Indigenous families access to historical medical records for children who went missing in the health care system prior to 1993.
“Our mandate is to leave nobody behind,” said Ruperthouse. “We lost two children in my family. I understand the suffering, that pain that comes when you lose someone. The child goes off to the hospital and never comes back.”
