Volunteers fear increased conflict between city, homeless population as shelter closes

Volunteer outreach workers are worried the City of Fredericton’s stance on tent encampments will make life more difficult for people living on the streets, particularly with the closure of a 33-bed overnight shelter as of Friday.

The shelter, located on the grounds of the New Brunswick Exhibition, was slated to close at the end of April once the temporary zoning variance that had allowed it to operate expired.

With that, some people will be left with no option other than to sleep outside, potentially putting them in conflict with city bylaws that have in the past resulted in tents being dismantled.
