The United Way Simcoe Muskoka is allocating over $3.5 million through Reaching Home: Canada’s Homelessness Strategy to tackle the housing crisis, particularly for those at risk of homelessness in rural and remote communities across Ontario. Brian Shelley, Chief Executive and Philanthropy Officer, emphasized the need for innovative programs to help over 200,000 Canadians who experience homelessness annually. Nearly $2 million of the funding will support capital projects, while the remainder is designated for individual support and social services.
Additionally, $798,395 is specifically earmarked for programs addressing the needs of Indigenous communities, recognizing their disproportionate impact from homelessness. All approved projects are set to launch in April 2025.
The United Way has established a timeline for applications: funding for non-capital initiatives will be open from October 22 to November 19, while applications for capital projects will be accepted from November 19 to December 17.
Interested parties are encouraged to attend information sessions throughout October and November to learn more about the initiative and application process. This funding aims to ensure that essential services and programs are available to meet the unique needs of vulnerable populations in rural Ontario.
