Sudbury estimates 500 people in the city experiencing homelessness

In Greater Sudbury, approximately 500 people are experiencing homelessness, as revealed by a recent point-in-time count conducted on October 8-9, required for the federal Reaching Home funding. This marks a significant increase from the 399 individuals identified in a similar count in October 2021. Cindy Junkala, Sudbury’s coordinator of shelters and homelessness, noted that the rise in outdoor homelessness reflects broader economic challenges, including high living costs and a scarcity of affordable housing.

Junkala highlighted that those facing poverty and discrimination struggle particularly hard to find suitable accommodations. The count, which included individuals living in encampments, shelters, and transitional housing, will inform the city’s strategies for addressing homelessness. City council plans to discuss the count results in an upcoming meeting, aiming to adjust services and programs to better meet the needs of the homeless population. The data gathered is critical for understanding the local homelessness landscape and for implementing effective support systems in response to the growing crisis.
