The Regina Executive Committee has approved the purchase of a new building for a low-barrier homeless shelter at 1600 Halifax Street, currently home to The Regina Eagles Club. This site was chosen from 72 potential locations and will be operated by Regina Treaty Status/Indian Services (RTSIS) with funding from all three levels of government, totaling $7.5 million, including $3 million from the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.
While the project aims to address homelessness, it has raised concerns among local business owners about community safety and the decision-making process. Many business representatives expressed feelings of exclusion from discussions and voiced worries that the shelter could exacerbate rising crime rates. Mayor Sandra Masters acknowledged these concerns, emphasizing the need for further engagement and consultation with the community.
Despite opposition, the need for a permanent shelter remains clear. The current lease on a temporary shelter expires in July 2025. City council is set to further discuss the proposed location on September 25, with the intention of making the new facility operational before the current lease ends. Ongoing dialogue will aim to address the concerns raised while facilitating the shelter’s rollout.
