Peepeekisis Cree Nation centre in Regina to help off-reserve members connect with community

On Wednesday, the Peepeekisis Cree Nation opened a new community center in Regina to support urban band members by enhancing their access to leadership and services. Chief Francis Dieter highlighted the necessity of this facility for the approximately 600-700 Peepeekisis members residing in Regina, about 114 kilometers from their main reserve. The center, located at 1220 Scarth Street, aims to offer a variety of programs, including training sessions, sewing classes, and cultural activities that mirror those available on reserve.

Headman Alvin Bird emphasized that urban members had long requested a space for programming and closer interaction with their leaders. The center will provide opportunities for members to create traditional regalia, make drums, and participate in language classes. Alicia Morrow, an urban member, noted that the facility will help bridge the gap between urban and on-reserve communities, fostering collaboration.

Third Vice Chief Ally Bear praised the Peepeekisis leadership for their commitment to off-reserve members, stating the importance of creating safe spaces in urban areas. She affirmed that leaving the reserve does not diminish their treaty rights, underscoring the need for accessible support and connection for Indigenous people living off-reserve.
