New permanent Hub homeless shelter proposed in Nanaimo, as current one faces imminent closure

Facing a looming closure, the social service organizations that operate a temporary winter shelter and drop-in centre, called the Hub, in Nanaimo, B.C., are proposing to create a permanent, year-round shelter — but it wouldn’t be ready for months, and the proposed location is already facing opposition.

At city council Monday night, Deborah Hollins with the Nanaimo Family Life Association and Violet Hayes with the Island Crisis Care Society appeared as delegates to ask for a letter of support as part of an application to B.C. Housing for a proposed new permanent location for the Hub.

“I don’t think I can overstate how badly needed the Hub is,” Hollins said ahead of the meeting.
