In Winnipeg, a group of volunteers is preparing 200 backpacks filled with clothing, non-perishable food, and essential supplies to support homeless individuals as winter approaches. The “Backpacks from Heaven” initiative began in memory of Chuck Neufeld’s son, Sean, who died from a drug overdose in 2021. Sean had been helping homeless people with food and clothing, a cause he continued after his girlfriend Destiny passed away a year earlier. Neufeld and other volunteers now assemble the backpacks in Sean’s memory, growing the number of care packages from 150 last year to 200 this year due to increasing demand.
Neufeld, deeply moved by the response, said that receiving the backpacks is a joyous occasion for homeless people, like Christmas. However, he also highlights the growing need for additional support, particularly for those struggling with addiction. Neufeld advocates for Manitoba’s plan to open a 72-hour protective care facility for intoxicated individuals and supports extending the detox center’s 24-hour limit. Community activist Mitch Bourbonniere also urges intervention for those in drug-induced psychosis, expressing concern for people left suffering on the streets. Both Neufeld and Bourbonniere agree that more comprehensive support and treatment services are urgently needed.
