The government of the Northwest Territories is looking for bidders on a $250,000 contract to provide personal storage space for people who are experiencing homelessness.
The territory’s “dignity through secure storage initiative” is intended to allow people to secure their belongings, such as medications, identification and other documents that they might need to access health care, income support and other resources, as well as things like clothing and supplies they may need to live on the streets.
Sally, who did not want to give her last name to protect her family’s privacy, has been homeless in the territory for almost 20 years. After her tent in Yellowknife was recently robbed, she’s been sleeping without blankets, pillows or mats.
“So all I’m sleeping on is just my jacket. And I’m damp all the time because it’s in the rocks,” she said. Everything she owns she now carries with her everywhere.
“I’m carrying my backpack and my back is sore 24/7,” she said.
The thieves also made off with food and clothing, including Sally’s cold weather gear. She says she’d gone to the Salvation Army to get warm pants, a sweater and socks.
“I’m always prepared ahead of time,” she said. All she has left now is the sweater.
Without storage, Sally and others in similar situations have to replace what they’ve lost, putting a strain on services.
