Twenty young people are embarking on an educational voyage aboard the Polar Prince, traveling from Stephenville to Conne River for a week of learning and adventure. The group includes students from Nunavut, Miawpukek First Nation, and Qalipu First Nation, who will work alongside the crew and scientists from the Marine Institute. The expedition involves various scientific activities, including the deployment of a smart buoy to collect data on currents and wave heights, which helps predict fishing seasons.
Participants will also engage in hands-on experiences, such as exploring shipwrecks through drop cameras and learning about the ship’s operations. Kippens, N.L. resident Sarah Doucette, who joined the trip after seeing a social media post, expressed excitement about the opportunity to explore science and history while aboard the vessel.
Ken Paul, who helped coordinate the expedition, hopes the experience sparks interest in maritime careers, with some students already considering courses for university and college. Upon reaching Conne River, the youth will participate in cultural activities, further enriching their journey. This educational voyage offers the students a unique blend of scientific exploration and cultural immersion.
