In North Bay, renovations are underway for affordable housing complexes on McNamara Street, part of a Liberal government initiative to upgrade urgently needed housing. Nipissing-Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota highlighted the importance of maintaining existing housing to prevent loss. The project, totaling nearly $5.2 million, is supported by a $1.5 million federal grant to the Nipissing District Housing Corp. It includes converting homes from fuel to electric heating, upgrading attic insulation, and enhancing accessibility for residents with hearing and vision impairments.
The renovations, affecting 155 units built between the mid-1960s and early 1990s, aim to extend their lifespan. Despite this investment, the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board, led by Mark King, emphasizes the need for more affordable housing to address homelessness and economic challenges. The board estimates a shortage of 200-300 affordable units in the region and calls for increased upper-level government intervention and private sector involvement.
King also noted the financial struggles faced by individuals on Ontario Works, highlighting that the monthly assistance of $733 is insufficient for housing. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation will contribute $10,000 per unit towards the renovation costs, with the Nipissing District Housing Corp. covering the remainder. The need for additional affordable housing units remains critical, as highlighted at the recent AMO conference in Ottawa.
