Encampment site next to Granite Curling Club ‘remediated,’ City of Winnipeg says

The City of Winnipeg says a long-standing homeless encampment in Mostyn Park has been cleared and that all residents have been connected with housing. City crews removed tents and other belongings from the park, located beside the Granite Curling Club in the West Broadway neighbourhood, on Wednesday. According to city spokesperson Julie Dooley, the park was “remediated” after city partners linked the individuals living there with housing earlier in the week.

The removal follows the implementation of new municipal rules that restrict where encampments can be located. As of last month, encampments are prohibited within 50 metres of schools, daycares, playgrounds and skating rinks, and within 30 metres of transit shelters, bridges, docks and certain public facilities. The Mostyn Park encampment was situated across the street from a daycare, placing it in violation of the new regulations.

The city has dismantled several encampments since the rules came into force. Officials previously estimated that about 15 people were living at the Mostyn Park site. While the city maintains that everyone displaced from encampments is offered either shelter or housing options, it has not provided details on how many residents secured permanent housing versus temporary placements in emergency shelters following the clearance.
