Calgary police have dismantled a complex underground tunnel and encampment near the Stampede grounds, citing health and safety concerns. Sgt. Kristian Thorpe of the community engagement response team described the structure as “incredibly elaborate” and dangerous for both its inhabitants and the surrounding community. The encampment was located in the 3200 block of 25th Avenue S.E., where a hidden tunnel led to a fully functioning shelter, measuring about six feet high, seven feet wide, and ten feet long.
Authorities conducted two searches of the site before a three-day excavation began. Although no individuals were found living in the shelter, a homemade stun gun was discovered. While the city enforces bylaws against camping on public land, police emphasize the need to balance enforcement with compassion for those experiencing homelessness. They acknowledge that homelessness is a complex issue requiring comprehensive solutions. The police stressed that effective responses must include affordable housing, social support, mental health services, and policies addressing systemic injustices, aiming for the realization of the basic human right to adequate housing for all.
