Under One Sky had been operating out of three buildings in the city and started as a child-care centre, but the new centre will incorporate several kinds of family programming.
There is an industrial-sized kitchen for catering and cooking classes, a workshop, education and counselling spaces and even a birthing centre.
That is a feature that McKinney is especially excited about.
“To bring our young women in a safe place where they can do this without having to be in a hospital,” she said, “that is just so emotional for me.”
The birthing centre hosts a private room with a bath tub, bed, bathroom, and outdoor garden area that people giving birth can access as they wish. McKinney hopes to include Indigenous doulas and midwives as well.
