Around 20 residents joined the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) on Friday morning to plant about 1,000 plants for the opening ceremony of an Indigenous Community Medicine Garden along the Neebing-McIntyre Floodway.
Located next to the Hope & Memory Garden, which honours those who have passed away or are currently battling cancer, the medicine garden similarly offers space for the Indigenous community to honour the lives that have been taken in Thunder Bay, Ont.
“It’s important to have a space that’s open to the public, especially the Indigenous community, that can come and have a space for reflection,” said Tammy Cook, the LRCA’s chief administrative officer.
Cook hoped the space would resonate with the community as somewhere that’s welcoming and useful in the future.
