Claudemier and Deidra Bighetty, once homeless and battling severe addictions, are now celebrating sobriety and a fresh start in Winnipeg. Claudemier, 49, is approaching two years of sobriety, while Deidra, 39, marks 19 months. Their journey from the streets—where they struggled with fentanyl, methamphetamine, and alcohol—has been transformative. They met on the streets of Winnipeg, where Claudemier was panhandling and Deidra had fled an abusive relationship. Their bond grew despite their destructive lifestyles, which included theft and drug abuse.
With support from Marion Willis and St. Boniface Street Links, which provides housing and recovery services, the Bighettys began their recovery journey. After years of setbacks, Claudemier hit a breaking point in 2023 due to drug-induced psychosis, which prompted him to seek help. He entered Morberg House for treatment, where he focused on his recovery, later praying for Deidra’s strength. Months later, she called, ready to change her life.
In August 2025, the couple married in a sober ceremony surrounded by family and friends. Today, Claudemier works as an outreach worker helping others off the streets, while Deidra is pursuing her high school diploma and aspires to become a mental health support worker. Their story is one of resilience, hope, and the transformative power of support and change.
