The Gizhe Waa Tii-Si-Win Service Expo in Winnipeg offers a one-stop resource for people experiencing homelessness, providing essential services like health cards, eye exams, and haircuts. Held at N’Dinawemak – Our Relatives Place, an Indigenous-led 24/7 shelter, the expo connects attendees with a range of support providers. Optometrists are offering free vision tests and ready-made glasses, while Manitoba Public Insurance is helping individuals obtain health cards, a critical need for accessing services. Connect 2 Voicemail is also promoting its free messaging service for those without phone access.
The expo serves as a reminder of the ongoing demand for shelter spaces, while the 211 phone line, managed by United Way Winnipeg, remains available year-round to connect individuals to services. The event reflects the Anishinaabemowin principle of “working with love, kindness, and generosity,” as community members come together to support those in need. With a variety of free services and community organizations offering a helping hand, the expo helps remove some of the barriers faced by those struggling with homelessness in Winnipeg.
